Low Pressure in 24 Hours: Extremely heavy rain alert for Odisha

Bhubaneswar: With a low pressure area likely to form over Northwest and adjoining Westcentral Bay of Bengal during next 24 hours, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Tuesday issued red warning of scattered heavy to very heavy rainfall (7 to 20 cm) with isolated extremely heavy (>20cm) for Odisha for two days.

“The cyclonic circulation over Eastcentral Bay of Bengal and neighbourhood now lies over Central parts of Bay of Bengal and adjoining north Bay of Bengal. Under its influence, a low pressure area is likely to form over Northwest and adjoining Westcentral Bay of Bengal during next 24 hours. Subsequently, it is likely to become more marked and move westnorthwestwards across south Odisha and North Andhra Pradesh coast,” the IMD said in its midday bulletin.

Red warning has been sounded for Malkangiri, Koraput, Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, Balangir and Kandhamal districts on Tuesday (September 12) and Cuttack, Dhenkanal, Angul, Nayagarh, Boudh, Sonepur, Kandhamal and Ganjam on Wednesday (September 11).

Red Warning

Scattered heavy to very heavy rainfall (7 to 20 cm) with isolated extremely heavy (>20cm) in Malkangiri, Koraput, Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, Balangir, Kandhamal

Orange Warning

Heavy to very heavy rainfall (7 to 20cm) may also occur at one or two places in Nuapada, Sonepur, Boudh, Nayagarh, Khurda, Puri, Ganjam, Gajapati and Rayagada.

Yellow Warning

Heavy Rainfall (7 to 11cm) ) is likely at one or two places in Sambalpur, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Jajpur, Cuttack, Bhadrak, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur.

Thunderstorm and lightning may occur at one or two places in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Sundargarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Jharsuguda, Deogarh, Sambalpur, Sonepur, Kandhamal, Boudh.

September 13

Red Warning

Scattered heavy to very heavy rainfall (7 to 20 cm) with isolated extremely heavy (>20cm) in Cuttack, Dhenkanal, Angul, Nayagarh, Boudh, Sonepur, Kandhamal, Ganjam

Orange Warning

Heavy to very heavy rainfall (7 to 20cm) may occur at a one or two places in Jajpur, Jagatsinghpur, Khurda, Puri, Gajapati, Rayagad, Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, Nuapada, Bolangir, Bargarh, Sambalpur.

Yellow Warning

Heavy Rainfall (7 to 11cm) is likely at one or two places in Koraput, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Deogarh, Keonjhar, Bhadrak and Kendrapada.

The weather agency has warned of flash flood, water-logging in low lying areas, inundation of agriculture field, mudslides or landslides in vulnerable hilly areas on these two days. The intense spells of rain might lead to a significant rise in the water level of rivers. There is also a possibility of some damage to kutcha road and houses and waterlogging at underpass road and occasional reduction of visibility leading to traffic congestion in urban areas. Farmers have been advised to postpone fertiliser/chemicals application in agricultural field, keep livestock in safe place.

The intensity of rain is likely to decrease slightly thereafter.

September 14

Orange Warning

Heavy to very heavy rainfall (7 to 20cm) is likely at a few places in Koraput, Nabarangpur, Nuapada, Balangir, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Rayagada, Gajapati and Ganjam districts.

Yellow Warning

Heavy Rainfall (7 to 11cm) may occur at one or two places in Malkangiri, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Angul, Sonepur, Boudh, Nayagarh, Cuttack, Khurda and Puri.

September 15

Yellow Warning

Heavy Rainfall (7 to 11cm) very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Sonepur, Balangir, Nuapada, Kalahandi, Nabarangpur.

Light to moderate rain or thundershower is also likely at most places in Interior Odisha and at many places in the coastal districts on this day.

There is no heavy rain warning during the subsequent two days, the IMD added.
