Bhubaneswar: In a step towards reducing pollution on its campuses, the Fakir Mohan University (FMU) in Odisha’s Balasore has decided to become vehicle-free.

This will come into effect on its campuses in Balasore and Nuapadhi under Remuna block, around 13km from the Balasore campus, from August 15.

According to varsity sources, vehicles of visitors and staff members, the vice-chancellor’s, and the students will be parked at a designated space outside the campus. Instead, four battery-operated vehicles, donated by the alumni association, and cycles will be deployed on the campuses to ferry staff, students and visitors.

“All necessary steps have been to avoid any inconvenience to the staff, students and visitors,” FMU vice-chancellor Santosh Kumar Tripathy said.

Additionally, wheelchairs will be made available at the entry gates for those who may require them, the VC said, adding that he hoped people would opt to walk from the entry gate to their destinations inside the campus.
