Bhubaneswar: Priyamani, the talented actress who played a pivotal role in the blockbuster film ‘Jawan,’ has found herself amid controversy following her recent statements on the contrasting approaches of South Indian and Bollywood film industries towards addressing critical social issues.

In an interview with ETimes, Priyamani expressed her views on the potency of South Indian cinema in dealing with important societal matters, emphasizing that one doesn’t need to be actively involved in politics to portray a compelling message or reality.

Highlighting the film ‘Jawan,’ which delves into poignant topics such as farmers’ suicide, significance of doctors, and the oxygen tragedy, Priyamani asserted that these issues depicted in the film are grounded in real-life occurrences. She confidently stated that the southern film industries have consistently been outspoken on such matters, and the film’s resonance with the audience stems from its willingness to confront these often-overlooked subjects.

“It was high time that somebody spoke about them,” she remarked which netizens found to be true.

Proud of her roots spanning Bengaluru, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala, Priyamani commended the southern film industries for their broad storytelling scope, addressing a myriad of subjects. She remarked that films from the South have been courageous in tackling diverse topics, a characteristic she believes hasn’t been as prevalent in the North.

She hopes that ‘Jawan’ not only entertains but also encourages audiences, especially in the North, to engage in more open discussions about pertinent societal issues.

Commenting on the continuous success of ‘Jawan,’ Priyamani expressed her joy and emphasized its ongoing popularity.

Despite more than 20 days since its release, Atlee Kumar’s ‘Jawan,’ featuring Shah Rukh Khan, continues to dominate at the box office. Surpassing the global milestone of Rs 1,000 crore, the film is now poised to cross the Rs 600 crore mark domestically.

Priyamani’s association with ‘Jawan’ holds special significance for her, marking her second collaboration with Bollywood’s Shah Rukh Khan after her appearance in a dance number in Rohit Shetty’s ‘Chennai Express’ (2013).
