The building will serve both as a shopping centre and kalyan mandap.

“The licenses and appeals standing committee of Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC) has unanimously decided to demolish the market complex, whose condition had worsened due to lack of maintenance. A double-storey multi-purpose building with a dedicated parking place will be built at the site,” chairman of the committee A Sreedevi told the media.

This proposal will be put up in the upcoming council meeting, she added.

Sources said that 51 shops in the market complex were allotted to as many shopkeepers on August 8, 2005. The structure, however, started to crumble in the absence of proper maintenance. The CMC also did not collect rent from the shopkeepers and when it issued a notice in 2016, only 16 of them turned up. The rest could not be traced.
