Traffic crawled in state capital Bhubaneswar as dense fog reduced visibility to 100 metres and so also in Cuttack. Khurda, Paradip, Chandbali, Kendrapada, Dhenkanal and Angul were also covered by a thick blanket of fog.

Very dense fog was seen in Nayagarh for the second consecutive day while Bhawanipatna, Jagatsinghpur, Jharsuguda, Sundargarh and Baripada reported shallow to moderate fog.

The weather agency has attributed the foggy morning to an active cyclonic circulation over Bay of Bengal off the coast of Odisha.

It had earlier predicted dense fog at one or two places in Kandhamal, Kalahandi, Koraput, Nabarangpur, Sundargarh, Keonjhar, and Jharsuguda till 8.30 am on Thursday. Shallow to moderate fog very at one or two places in remaining districts of the state.

Amid the foggy conditions, the state also saw a slight rise in the night temperature with Koraput being the coldest at 9.2 degree Celsius, followed by Semiliguda also in Koraput districts at 11.1 degree Celsius and Kirei in Sundargarh at 11.4 degree Celsius. The twin cities of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack recorded 19.5 and 19.4 degree Celsius, respectively, 4 and 5 degrees above normal.

The MeT office has forecast no large change in the minimum temperature during next 4-5 days. Odisha is likely to witness shallow to moderate fog another two days along with light to moderate rain.

According to the MeT office, light to moderate rain\thundershower may occur at a few places in Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Bhadrak, and at one or two places in Keonjhar, Sundargarh, Dhenkanal, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, and Jagatsinghpur till 8.30 on Friday. Light rain\thundershower may occur at one or two places in Balasore, Bhadrak, and Kendrapada districts during the subsequent 24 hours.

According to the news agency, thick blanket of fog may occur at one or two places in Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Sundargarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Cuttack, Khurda, Puri, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Kandhamal, Kalahandi, Balangir, and Koraput districts. Shallow to moderate fog is also likely across the state during next 3 days.

On January 17, light rain may occur at one or two places in Bargarh, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Keonjhar, Sambalpur, Deogarh, and Mayurbhanj. Light rain is also likely at one or two places in Sundargarh, Keonjhar, Deogarh, Mayurbhanj, Angul, Dhenkanal, Jajpur, Balasore, and Bhadrak during the subsequent 24 hours.

The MeT office further said that there will be no large change in the night temperature at many places in the state during the next 4-5 days.

Notably, six places had recorded temperature below 10 degree Celsius in the last 24 hours with Kirei in Sundargarh district being the coldest places in Odisha for the second consecutive day at 7.7 degree Celsius. The twin cities of Cuttack and Bhubaneswar recorded 17.2 and 18.5 degree Celsius, respectively, 2.8 and 3.3 degrees above normal.

Shallow to moderate fog is also likely at a few places in Koraput, Kandhamal, Kalahandi, Nabarangpur, Sundargarh, South Coastal Odisha and at one or two places in remaining districts of the state.

Yellow warning: Dense fog may occur at one or two places in Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Kendrapada, Kandhamal, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, Balangir, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, and Deogarh.

Shallow to moderate fog is also likely at a few places in Coastal Odisha, South Interior Odisha and at one or two places in remaining places in the state.

Notably, Rourkela witnessed very dense fog, restricting visibility to 5o metre, this morning. Dense fog was also seen in Paradip, Kendrapada, Cuttack and Phulbani. Similarly, shallow to moderate fog occurred in Bhubaneswar, Bhawanipatna, Jharsuguda and Keonjhar.

The weather agency further said that there will be no large change in the minimum temperature, which is likely to remain 2-3 degrees above normal during next 5 days.

Daringbadi, G Udayagiri and Phulbani, all in Kandhamal district, recorded 8.5, 9.4 and 10 degree Celsius respectively, followed by Keonjhar at 10.3 degree Celsius, Ranital in Bhadrak at 10.6 degree Celsius, Semiliguda in Koraput at 10.7, Kirei in Sundargarh at 10.7 degree Celsius and Angul at 11 degree Celsius.

The twin cities of Cuttack and Bhubaneswar recorded 14.5 and 16 degree Celsius, respectively.

According to the weather agency, very dense fog engulfed Rourkela this morning, restricting visibility to 50 metres. Phulbani, Koraput, Sonepur, Cuttack and Nayagarh also witnessed dense fog. Shallow and moderate fog was seen in Bhawanipatna and Keonjhar.

The Met office has issued yellow warning of dense fog for 2 more days.

From 8.30 am on January 4 till 8.30 am on January 5

Dense fog may occur at one or two places in Angul, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Dhenkanal, Cuttack, Nayagarh, Khurda, Kandhamal, Kalahandi, Rayagada, Koraput, Sonepur, Balangir, Sambalpur and Boudh districts.

Shallow to moderate fog is also likely at a few places in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Mayurbhanj, Khurda, Puri, Angul, Boudh, Kandhamal, Rayagada, Koraput and one or two places in rest districts of Odisha.

From 8.30 am on January 5 till 8.30 am on January 6

Dense fog is also likely at one or two places in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Mayurbhanj, Khurda, Puri, Angul, Kandhamal, Rayagada, Koraput,Malkangiri, Gajapati, Ganjam, and Nayagarh districts.

As per the Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar, Koraput was followed by Daringbadi in Kandhamal district at 8.5 degree Celsius. Similarly, G Udaygiri, also in Kandhamal, recorded a minimum temperature of 9 degree Celsius, followed by the district headquarters town of Phulbani at 10.5 degree Celsius.

Both Angul and Bhawanipatna recorded minimum temperature of 12 degree Celsius. As many as six places in the state recorded minimum (night) temperature of 12 degree Celsius and below as the mercury continued to rise in most parts of the state.

The temperature in most parts of the state stood 2 to 4 degree above normal and the impact of cold got reduced considerably.

While Bhubaneswar recorded the minimum temperature of 15.8 degree Celsius (1.6 degree above normal), the night temperature stood at 15.5 degree Celsius in Cuttack (2 degree above normal).
The MeT Centre has forecast that some parts of the state are expected to experience light rain in the first week of January.

As the mercury started rising, many parts of the state were enveloped by dense fog, disrupting normal life and vehicular movement on Saturday morning.

Dense fog was experienced in places like Phulbani, Khurda, Koraput, Daringbadi and Sonepur with visibility level getting reduced to around 50 metres.

Shallow to moderate fog was experienced in Bhawanipatna, Titlagarh, Keonjhar, Rourkela and Sambalpur.
