According to MeT officials, the chances of rain havoc in Odisha districts were reduced as the severe cyclonic storm Michaung, which ripped through Andhra Pradesh coast on Tuesday afternoon, moved northwards.
Though there is no more cyclone threat for Odisha, Michaung’s remnants will cause heavy rain in some parts of the state during the day. The IMD has issued yellow warning of heavy rain for one or two places in Malkangiri, Koraput, Nabarangpur, and Nuapada. Light to moderate rain/thundershower is also likely at most places in South interior Odisha and at many places in remaining parts of the state.
The weather agency has also warned of some damage to crops and vegetables in the view of the possible heavy rain.
Squally wind speed reaching 35-45 kmph gusting to 55 kmph is prevailing along and off Odisha coast and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal. It is likely to continue during next 6 hours and would gradually decrease thereafter, it further said.
Light to moderate rain may also continue at a few places in the state on Thursday. Dry weather will prevail thereafter. “There will be no large change in night temperature during next 2 days and then fall by 2-3°C in subsequent 3 days,” it added.
Notably, Odisha recorded an average rainfall of 6.5 mm in the last 24 hours as Malkangiri, Koraput and Rayagada received very heavy rainfall on Tuesday night under the influence of the tropical storm even as it has started losing its intensity gradually. The highest downpour of 106 mm was recoded in Pottangi block in Koraput district, it added.

While light to moderate rain/thundershower may occur at a few places in Koraput, Nabarangpur, Rayagada, Gajapati, and one or two places in Kalahandi, Malkangiri, Kandhamal, Ganjam and Nuapada districts during the day, dry weather is likely to prevail across the state thereafter till the end of this month (November 30). In its Tropical Weather Outlook, the agency said the GFS group of models are indicating further intensification of this system into a cyclonic storm. “These models are indicating initial west-northwestwards movement till December 1, followed by northwards movement thereafter. However, gradual weakening is indicated on December 3 over west-central Bay of Bengal,” it added.

]]>Semiliguda in Koraput district recorded the lowest minimum temperature of 12.4 degree Celsius followed by Koraput and G Udayagiri in Kandhamal at 12.6 degree Celsius each, and Daringbadi and Phulbani, also in Kandhamal, at 13.5 and 14 degree Celsius, respectively. The night temperature also dropped to 15 degree Celsius at Nabarangpur, 15.5 degree Celsius at Kirei and 16.5 degree Celsius at Bhawanipatna and Boudh. Rourkela recorded 16.7 degree Celsius while the twin cities of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack saw the mercury drop to 19.8 and 19.5 degree Celsius, respectively.
With the likely formation of a low pressure area over Southeast Bay of Bengal around November 14, and its intensification into depression over Central and adjoining South Bay of Bengal around November 16 after moving westnorthwestwards, light to moderate rain is likely to resume in Odisha from November 15.
“A cyclonic circulation lies over Gulf of Thailand and it is likely to emerge into Andaman Sea on November 13. Under its influence, a low-pressure area is likely to form over Southeast Bay of Bengal around November 14. It is likely to move westnorthwestwards and intensify into a depression over Central & adjoining South Bay of Bengal around November 16,” the MeT office said in its midday bulletin.
Rainfall is expected in parts of coastal and interior pockets under the influence of the possible system, Umashankar Das, a scientist of the regional IMD centre in the city, said. However, there will be no major change in the night temperature during next 4-5 days.

Squally weather with gusty surface wind speed reaching 45-65 kmph is also likely along and off Odisha coast from October 24. The sea condition will be rough to very rough over these areas during above mentioned period.
Fishermen are advised not to venture into deep sea area of West central Bay of Bengal from Sunday, over west central Bay of Bengal from October 23 and along and off Odisha coast and north Bay of Bengal during October 24 to 26. Fishermen whoever in deep sea are advised to return to the coast by Sunday.
While no warning of heavy rain has been issued by the IMD for Odisha, several places in the state may receive light to moderate rain or thundershower under its impact on October 23 and 24 during Dussehra.
As per MeT forecast, light to moderate rain or thundershower is likely to occur at some places over coastal Odisha and at one or two places over Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Angul, Dhenkanal, Kandhamal, Rayagada, Koraput, and Malkangiri districts on October 23.

Thunderstorm with lightning is likely to continue during the day across the state and people have been advised to take shelter at safe places to protect themselves from lightning strikes.
On September 5, heavy to very heavy rainfall (7 to 20 cm) is likely at isolated places in Malkangiri, Koraput and Nabarangpur. Heavy rain may also lash isolated places in Rayagada, Kandhamal, Boudh, Nuapada, Balangir, Bargarh, Jharsuguda, Sundargarh, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Kalahandi, Sonepur and Sambalpur.
The weather agency has warned of temporary waterlogging at low-lying areas, poor visibility during intense spells of rain and traffic congestion in urban areas on these two days. There is also a possibility of inundation of low-lying agricultural fields. Farmers have been advised to postpone fertilizer/chemicals application in agricultural field and keep livestock/domestic animals at safe places.
The intensity of rain in the state is likely to decrease thereafter.
On September 6, heavy rainfall (7 to 11cm) may occur at isolated places in Malkangiri, Koraput, Nabarangpur, Rayagada, Gajapati, Ganjam, Nuapada, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Kalahandi, and Balangir. Similar warning has been sounded for the subsequent 24 hours (September 7) with heavy rainfall likely at isolated places in Sundargarh, Keonjhar, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Bargarh, Sonepur, Balangir, Nabarangpur and Nuapada. There is no heavy rain warning thereafter.
Notably, the state recorded 815.2 mm rainfall against its normal value of 952.5 mm till September this monsoon season with 10 districts, including Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, Ganjam, Kendrapada and Jagatsinghpur, in deficit zone and the rest 20 in the normal category.
