US – www.publictrustofindia.com https://publictrustofindia.com Odisha English News Tue, 28 Nov 2023 13:48:22 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=6.9.4 Indian envoy Taranjit Singh Sandhu ‘heckled’ by pro-Khalistan group at US gurdwara https://publictrustofindia.com/2023/11/28/indian-envoy-to-us-heckled-outside-ny-gurdwara-by-khalistani-supporters/ Tue, 28 Nov 2023 08:34:08 +0000 https://publictrustofindia.com/?p=7093 Bhubaneswar: A group of Khalistani supporters heckled Indian Ambassador to the US, Taranjit Singh Sandhu outside a gurdwara in New York and accused him of killing Sikh hardliner Hardeep Singh Nijjar and also “plotted to murder” Gurpatwant Singh Pannun — a listed individual terrorist of the banned Sikhs for Justice (SFJ) outfit.

The incident came days after Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Arindam Bagchi on November 22 said that US shared some inputs pertaining to nexus between organised criminals, gun runners, terrorists and others and these inputs are a cause of concern for both countries and they decided to take necessary follow up action.

The incident took place at Hicksville Gurdwara in New York where a person could be heard shouting at the Sandhu with accusations over the killing of Nijjar, who was shot dead in Canada in June this year.

BJP spokesperson RP Singh Khalsa on Monday shared a video which showed Sandhu being surrounded by people amid continuous shouting.

“Khalistanies tried to heckle Indian Ambassador Taranjit Singh Sandhu with basless Questions for his role in the failed plot to assassinate Gurpatwant, (SFJ) and Khalistan Referendum campaign,” he said on X.

“Himmat Singh who led the pro Khalistanies at Hicksville Gurdwara in New York also accused ambassador Sandhu for India’s role in the assassination of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, who was President of Surrey Gurdwara and the coordinator for Canadian Chapter of the Khalistan Referendum.”

In a similar incident in September this year, Indian High Commissioner to the UK Vikram Doraiswami was not allowed to enter a gurdwara in Scotland’s Glasgow by a few Khalistani radicals.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) had on November 20 registered a fresh case against ‘listed individual terrorist’ Pannun over his latest viral video threatening the passengers flying on Air India with a global blockade and closure of the operations of the airline from November 19.

In his statement on November 22, Bagchi had also said that issues in the context of US inputs were already being examined by relevant departments. In a statement on reports of discussions between India and US on security matters.

“During the course of recent discussions on India-US security cooperation, the US side shared some inputs pertaining to nexus between organized criminals, gun runners, terrorists and others.”

He said the inputs were a cause of concern for both countries and they decided to take necessary follow up action and added that on its part, India takes such inputs “seriously” since it impinges on our own national security interests as well.

“Issues in the context of US inputs are already being examined by relevant departments,” the MEA spokesperson added.

‘Super Fog’ pileup leaves 8 dead, 63 injured & over 160 vehicles damaged in US https://publictrustofindia.com/2023/10/26/super-fog-pileup-leaves-8-dead-63-injured-over-160-vehicles-damaged-in-us/ Thu, 26 Oct 2023 05:13:14 +0000 https://publictrustofindia.com/?p=6364 Bhubaneswar: Eight people were killed, at least five dozen injured and 168 vehicles were damaged on an interstate in Louisiana during a “super fog” that left visibility near zero. Troopers identified an additional victim of the crash who died at a local hospital, increasing the fatality count to eight individuals. The crash on Interstate 55, involving at least 168 vehicles, occurred Monday morning due to heavy fog conditions, according to Louisiana State Police, Fox News reported.

The Louisiana Department of Traffic Development reported an 11-mile backup. Additional fatalities could be located once the crash scene is completely cleared, police were quoted as saying, adding that a long stretch of I-55, a 24-mile-long highway near New Orleans is expected to be closed “for the foreseeable future.”

For hours after the crash, emergency crews worked to clear debris from both northbound and southbound lanes, according to state police.

Storm Chaser Brandon Clement told FOX Weather that first responders and emergency crews had a large tent with portable restrooms and a communications center to stage the recovery and cleanup. Police said that a portion of the large crash scene caught on fire shortly after the initial incident. Photos from the Louisiana State Police show multiple car pileups, with some of the cars being severely burned from the accident.

US Green card dream of Indians shattered: 4 lakh applicants will die waiting https://publictrustofindia.com/2023/09/06/us-green-card-dream-of-indians-shattered4lakkh-applicants-will-die-waiting/ Wed, 06 Sep 2023 07:23:26 +0000 https://publictrustofindia.com/?p=4064 Bhubaneswar: With over 11 lakh applications from Indians pending in the employment-based green card backlog of the United States, over 4 lakh Indians will die before they receive a green card, a new report has said.

A green card or a Permanent Resident Card is a document issued to US immigrants granting them permanent residence in the country.

India makes up 63% of the total 18 lakh employment-based green-card applications now pending in the country, US-based think tank Cato Institute said in a report. This backlog adds to the 83 lakh pending applications from the family-sponsored system.

According to the report, for new applicants from India, the backlog is effectively “a life sentence” with over 134 years of wait time. “About 424,000 employment-based applicants will die waiting, and over 90 percent of them will be Indians. Given that Indians are currently half of all new employer-sponsored applicants, roughly half of all newly sponsored immigrants will die before they receive a green card,” it said.

While the US employs a significant number of Indians and Chinese for STEM roles, only seven per cent of employment-based green cards can go to individuals from a country annually. This puts India at a significant disadvantage with over half of the backlog for employees of US businesses with advanced degrees including highly-skilled STEM professionals and US-educated graduates.“These astounding backlogs and massive waits underscore that legal immigration to the United States is nearly impossible. Even to get to the point of entering the backlog takes an enormous amount of good fortune, and the lucky few that make it through the labyrinth face the daunting prospect of never actually receiving green cards in decades or even their lifetimes,” the report said.

Former US president Donald Trump arrested on racketeering and conspiracy charges https://publictrustofindia.com/2023/08/25/former-us-president-donald-trump-arrested-on-racketeering-and-conspiracy-charges/ Fri, 25 Aug 2023 12:48:58 +0000 https://publictrustofindia.com/?p=3486 Bhubaneswar: Former US president Donald Trump was arrested at a Georgia jail Thursday on racketeering and conspiracy charges and released on $200,000 bond after having a historic mug shot taken, AFP reported. According to Reuters, he spent 20 minutes in Atlanta’s Fulton County Jail before leaving in a motorcade for the airport.

Like the other defendants in the case who have surrendered so far, the 77-year-old Trump had his mug shot taken during the booking process, a first for any serving or former US president.

In the photograph released by the sheriff’s office, he scowled at the camera while dressed in a dark blue suit, white shirt and red tie.

Speaking to reporters after his arrest, Trump, the frontrunner for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, said it was a “very sad day for America.”

Trump was given the inmate number “PO1135809” by the Fulton County Jail, which listed his height as six foot three inches (1.9 meters), his weight as 215 pounds (97 kilograms) and his hair color as “Blond or Strawberry.”

The billionaire has been criminally indicted four times since April, setting the stage for a year of unprecedented drama as he tried to juggle multiple court appearances and another White House campaign. His arrest came one day after he spurned a televised debate in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, featuring eight of his rivals for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, all of whom lag well behind him in the polls.

Shortly after his arrest, his campaign launched t-shirts that displayed the same. The t-shirt has been listed on the Trump campaign’s official website for $34, with the words “Never Surrender” written below the mugshot.

Trump, who is running for president in the 2024 election, has already made history as the first former US president to face criminal charges-not once but four times. This, however, was the first time he had to pose for a booking photo.

Donald Trump warns India of reciprocal tax if elected US president again next year https://publictrustofindia.com/2023/08/21/donald-trump-warns-india-of-reciprocal-tax-if-elected-us-president-again-next-year/ Mon, 21 Aug 2023 15:48:01 +0000 https://publictrustofindia.com/?p=3337 Bhubaneswar: Not for the first time, Donald Trump has fired a warning at India.

The former US president, who is preparing to contest the 2024 elections, raised the issue of high taxes in India on certain American products and threatened to slap reciprocal taxes on New Delhi if he wins a second term, reported PTI.

During his first term as US president from 2016 to 2020, Trump had described India as ‘tariff king’. He even terminated India’s preferential market access — Generalised System of Preferences (GSP) — to the US in May 2019, alleging that India have not given the US “equitable and reasonable access to its markets.”

Despite facing several court cases and indictments, Trump is leading the Republican presidential primaries with over half of the GOP votes according to major national polls.

“The other thing I want to have is a matching tax where, if India charges us — India is very big with tariffs. I mean, I saw it with Harley-Davidson. I was saying, how do you do in a place like India? Oh, no good sir. Why? They have 100 per cent and 150 per cent and 200 per cent tariffs,” the 77-year-old former President said in an interview with Fox Business News.

“So, I said, so they can sell their Indian motorbike. They actually make a bike, an Indian motorbike. They can sell that into our country with no tax, no tariff, but when you make a Harley, when you send it over there — because they were doing no business. I said, how come you don’t do business with India? The tariff is so high that nobody wants it. But what they want us to do is, they want us to go over and build a plant, and then you have no tariff,” Trump said.

“They said, well, that’s not good. That’s not our deal, okay? That’s not our deal. And I came down very hard on them. But India is very big. Brazil is very big on tariffs, I mean, very, very big. We had a couple of people, like the senator from a place called Pennsylvania that I love. But this guy was just horrendous. I said, let me ask you a question. If India is charging us 200 per cent, and we’re charging them nothing for products, can we charge them 100 per cent? No, sir, that’s not free trade. Can we charge them 50 per cent? No, sir. Twenty-five, 10, anything? No. I said, what the hell is wrong? There’s something wrong. You know what I’m talking about,” he said.

“If India is charging us too, so what I want to have is a — call it retribution. You could call it whatever you want. If they are charging us, we charge them,” Trump made it clear.

That won’t be music to the ears of Indian business houses.
