Moderate thunderstorm with lightning and intense/heavy spells of rain may occur at some places in Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Koraput and Malkangiri districts in 3 hours. The MeT office has warned of lightning strikes and waterlogging in low-lying areas.

The weather agency has also issued yellow warning of light to moderate rain/thundershower for some parts of Puri, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapada, Khurda, Cuttack, Jajpur, Bhadrak, and Balasore. People have been advised to keep a watch on the weather and accordingly move to safer places to protect themselves from lightning strikes.

According to the morning bulletin, light/moderate fairly widespread to widespread rainfall/thunderstorm and lightning with isolated heavy rainfall activity is likely in Odisha during the day (September 8). The IMD has forecast heavy rainfall at one or two places in Bargarh, Jharsuguda, Sundargarh, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Cuttack and Dhenkanal districts.

There is no heavy rain warning for Odisha thereafter as the cyclonic circulation is expected to move west-northwestwards and lie over central parts of Madhya Pradesh during September 8-10.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has also issued yellow warning of heavy rain for isolated places in Rayagada, Gajapati, Ganjam, Kandhamal, Kalahandi, Nuapada, Balangir, Balasore, Bhadrak, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda and Sambalpur till 8.30 am on Wednesday.

The weather agency has warned of temporary waterlogging at low-lying areas, poor visibility during intense spells of rain and traffic congestion in urban areas and landslides in hilly areas. Farmers have been advised to postpone fertilizer/chemicals application in agricultural field and keep livestock/domestic animals at safe places.

On September 6, heavy rain (7 to 11cm) may lash isolated places in Malakangiri, Koraput, Nabarangpur, Rayagada, Kalahandi, Nuapada, Balangir, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Sonepur, Boudh, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Deogarh, Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj. Similar warning has been issued for Nuapada, Balangir, Bargarh, Sonepur, Boudh, Sambalpur, Jharsuguda, Sundargarh, Deogarh, Angul, Cuttack, Keonjhar, and Mayurbhanj during the subsequent 24 hours (September 7).

There is also a forecast for heavy rain at isolated places in Bargarh, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Sundargarh, Deogarh, Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj on September 8.

The IMD has issued no further heavy rain warning.

Notably, the state has been experiencing some intense spells of rain for the past few days after a subdued monsoon and recorded 16.7 mm rainfall in the last 24 hours with the highest of 142.4 mm in Belaguntha block of Ganjam district. Besides Belaguntha, Suliapada (132 mm) and Khunta (103 mm) in Mayurbhanj district recorded more than 100 mm rainfall.

However, 10 districts still are deficient while rest 20 in the normal category with Odisha having received 832.1 mm rainfall against its normal value of 963.1 mm till Septmber 5 this monsoon season.

Heavy rain may also occur at some places in Bargarh, Sonepur, Balangir, Angul, Dhenkanal, Mayurbhanj, Cuttack, Khurda, and Puri. Yellow warning of thunderstorm with lightning has also been issued for one or two places in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Balangir, Boudh, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nayagarh, Khurda, Ganjam and Puri.

The intensity of rain is likely to steadily decrease thereafter with heavy rainfall at one or two places in Sundargarh, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada on August 25. Thunderstorm with lightning is also likely at one or two in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Sundargarh, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Dhenkanal, Kandhamal, Kalahandi, Rayagada, Nabarangpur, Malkangiri and Koraput.

Light to moderate rain or thundershower may occur at many places across Odisha on these two days.

The Met office has sounded yellow warning of heavy rainfall at one or two places in Malkangiri and Koraput on August 26. Thunderstorm with lightning very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Mayurbhanj, Kandhamal, Rayagada, Malkangiri, Koraput and Nabarangpur. There is also a forecast for light to moderate rain or thundershower at many places in coastal Odisha, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Dhenkanal, Kandhamal, Kalahandi, Nabarangpur, Rayagada, Malkangiri and Koraput and at a few places in the remaining districts of the state.

While there is no more warning for Odisha, light to moderate rain may occur at a few places across the state during the next two days with little change in the weather condition in the subsequent two days, the weather agency added.

Notably, Tangi in Khurda district record the highest rainfall of 145 mm in the last 24 hours followed by 81.2 mm at Bahalda (Mayubhanj), 76 mm at Athagarh (Cuttack), 71 mm at Bhuban (Dhenkanal), 69mm at Udala (Mayurbhanj) and 61.2mm at Sukinda (Jajpur).

Odisha has recorded 760.2 mm against the normal of 838.8 mm till August 24 this monsoon season. While two districts have received excess rainfall, 11 are deficient and the rest 17 districts in the normal category, according to the regional centre here.
