Balangir: Gobinda Sahu, the principal culprit in the Mamita Meher murder case, reportedly committed suicide on Tuesday at Kantabanji Sub-Jail in Odisha’s Balangir district.
According to authorities, Sahu was discovered with a gamcha hanging from a tree on the jail grounds and was transported to Kantabanji Sub-divisional Hospital, where medics proclaimed him dead. Sahu was supposed to appear in front of the JMFC court.
Mamita, a native of Balangir’s Turekela block, was employed as a teacher at the Sunshine English Medium School in Mahaling, Kalahandi district. On October 8, 2021, the 24-year-old instructor went missing. Mamita’s family members filed a police report, alleging that the school’s management committee head, Sahu, was involved in her abduction. On October 19, Mamita’s burnt bones were discovered at the construction site of a stadium near the school.
Sahu was later arrested for kidnapping and killing Mamita with the assistance of his driver, Radheshyam Chandi.
Sahu allegedly met Mamita in Chandotara on October 8. He then drove her to Bhawanipatna for some shopping. Later, both went to the Manikeswari temple, and on the way back, he strangled her to death in the back seat of the automobile.
Ranjit Sahu, the principal of Mahaling College, and Kruti Chandan, a member of the management committee, were detained earlier this month on suspicion of influencing witnesses in the murder case.
